PHILOSOPHY
Welcome to Studio MWA and Davor Mikulcic Architects, collaborative design-focused studios based in Wellington and Brisbane. Led by founder and design director Davor Mikulcic, our architectural practices embody creativity, innovation, and a commitment to delivering unique, top-quality designs across a diverse range of projects.
Our philosophy is straightforward: we recognize the value of diversity within our team — individuals with varied cultural backgrounds, education, and creativity. We believe that through hard work, collaboration, extensive discussion, and research, we gain the freedom to express our ideas and visions, resulting in extraordinary and quality designs. Every project is site-specific, emphasizing a deep understanding of the site and context as a fundamental element of good design.
At the heart of our designs is collaboration; the entire team contributes to the success of each project, valuing diverse opinions and striving for excellence. We emphasize the importance of a strong IDEA for every project, considering it a crucial element of our studio culture.
Client relationships are pivotal to our success, and we prioritize strong communication from the project’s inception. We encourage an ongoing exchange of needs, ideas, and insights, fostering trust and ensuring project success.
Our hands-on approach extends from the beginning to the completion of each project, allowing us to capture the essence and power of our ideas and designs. We distance ourselves from fashion architecture, favouring a pragmatic yet visionary approach. Our goal is to avoid producing conventional or abstract architecture that lacks connection with the real world. We believe there is ample space between these extremes to express our vision for a better human future.
Each project adheres to pragmatic and professional criteria while continuously exploring new interpretations. Our ongoing philosophy centers on creating clear, sculptural, and functional architectural solutions in everything from interior architecture to urban design.
Creativity, functionality, and environmental sensibility are key ingredients in our design process. We emphasize attention to detail, understanding that these elements contribute to the production of high-quality designs.
Our absolute commitment to these principles ensures our ongoing success, as we continue to shape spaces that reflect our vision for a better and more sustainable future.
SUSTAINABILITY
At our architectural studios, our unwavering commitment to Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) underscores our vision for a brighter future. From our studio’s inception, we have made ESD a cornerstone of our practice, aligning our goals with the well-being of both individuals and the broader community. This commitment is not just a professional duty but a shared responsibility we uphold as ordinary citizens.
ESD is not merely a trendy concept for us; it is an integral aspect of our overarching design philosophy. We integrate sustainable principles into every project, not as a stylistic choice but as an ethical imperative. Our conviction is that a sustainable and environmentally conscious approach is not just beneficial but essential for creating quality architecture.
In our design team, ESD principles — including thoughtful building orientation, harnessing natural light, optimizing natural ventilation, and utilizing passive solar energy — form the bedrock of our daily work. We prioritize the use of natural, recyclable, and eco-friendly materials, employ effective sun protection measures, and are dedicated to reducing energy consumption. Our designs strive to strike a harmonious balance, offering comfortable living and working spaces without compromising environmental integrity.
Whether it’s offices, libraries, holiday homes, family residences, renovations, industrial structures, religious buildings, kindergartens, motels, or any future endeavours, our commitment to minimizing environmental impact remains steadfast. Our designs aim to not only reduce negative effects on the environment but also foster better and healthier spaces for our clients.
Contrary to common misconceptions, a sustainable approach need not incur additional costs. We firmly believe that as intelligent contributors to the larger ecosystem, we must continuously champion environmental protection and avoid irresponsibility. Our work is an ongoing exploration of alternative solutions to achieve a balance in energy resources, and this innovative spirit permeates every project we undertake.
In the wise words of a Native American proverb, “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” This resonates deeply with our ethos, motivating us to be custodians of the environment for the sake of current and future generations. Through our collective efforts, we strive to shape a future where sustainability is not just a goal but an inherent part of every design, making the world a better place for all.

DESIGN PROCESS
The architectural design process is a dynamic and intricate journey, far from a simple linear path. It’s an iterative exploration, unveiling beauty at every turn. Throughout this journey, we employ a diverse range of techniques to ensure clarity for ourselves, clients, consultants, and tradespeople involved in the project. Our studio culture seamlessly integrates computer modeling specialists and scale modeling techniques, creating a holistic design approach from the initial concept to the detailed documentation stage, often extending to on-site assembly.
The initiation of most projects involves an independent FEASIBILITY STUDY, where the PRE-DESIGN STAGE includes thorough site visits and analysis to comprehend site constraints, visualize the context, and understand client needs. Early discussions and brainstorming sessions with the entire team play a vital role in setting the foundation for quality design. The Feasibility Study serves as a crucial tool, enabling clients to fully grasp the project’s scope, initial ideas, and facilitating the establishment of a comprehensive Architect Agreement.

Firmly anchored in the belief that exploration supported by rigorous research is the cornerstone of architectural evolution, our team is committed to pushing the boundaries of practice.
A focal point of our research endeavors is the Principle of Universal Design. Constant exploration, refinement, and implementation of this principle permeate our projects, with the Blundell Residence standing as a globally recognized exemplar of contemporary residential Universal Design. Often showcased as a case study for wheelchair-accessible residential design, it epitomizes our commitment to inclusive architecture.
